Enugu urban area is dominated by a western highland, a dissected cuesta,
traditionally called the “Udi hill”. The geological structure of the
area is made up of mainly the cretaceous rocks, a sedimentary material
formed some million years ago. The cretaceous rocks comprise sediments
from the central highland of Nigeria and sand from the Atlantic Ocean.
The major mineral found in the area is coal. The main
streams which drain the area include: The Ekulu River, Asata River,
Nguege River and the Aria River flowing more or less south east. These
together with their tributaries drain the Enugu urban area.
