ABSTRACT

The study is aimed at looking at characteristics of inter-urban road transportation in Enugu state (Enugu urban as a nodal-centre). Transportation is an agency by which every part of society is brought into relation with every other (cooley, 1894). Road transportation is by far the most important transport medium in Nigeria. This is because of its ubiquitous nature and flexibility. The methods used in collecting the data from the study area were mainly by the use of questionnaire, interview and field observations, secondly sources of data included the use of published and unpublished materials such as data from books, journals, periodicals magazines and papers delivered at seminars conferences, workshops held at different parts of the world as well as dissertations.

With increased in population and technological development of an area, the problem of transportation increases. This study is interested in documenting the movement of vehicles within Enugu state (Enugu urban as nodal centre). The sampled areas are grouped into three (3) zones that were made up of various mass transit stations and motor parks. Investigation to examine whether there is a significant variation or not in the mean volume of the traffic flow was also carried out using analysis of variance technique and percentage techniques. The research finding showed that there is a wide variation of traffic flow in the three (3) studied zones. Thus the alternative hypothesis of this study was accepted. It concluded that there is inefficient Inter-urban road transportation in Enugu state with reference to the three studied zones and also that the functional relationship of the urban centre in Enugu state with their neighbouring urban centre in other regions was responsible for the variation in the volume of traffic flow in inter-urban road transport.
