1.2 STATEMENT
OF PROBLEM
Experience has shown that there is
high cost of transport fare, time wasting and choice of vehicle by passengers
while moving form one urban centre to another in Nigeria as a whole and Enugu
state in particular. As development of areas increased with population, the
problem of transportation increases as there is more need to transport people
and their goods from one place to another (Olakunori 2001).
The poor state of road has combined
with the bad state of vehicle as a result of inexperienced driver and this as a
great treat to vehicle transport in Nigeria. This affect the economy of the
country in the sense that the time where people and items of trade are to be
convey from place of surplus to places of deficit in order to improve our
economic wellbeing and advance in development of the nation is not so. A lot of
problem hinders this development.
There appears to be a lot of
problems that are associated with vehicle transport in our Nigerian society
today. Such problems include the increasing rate of accident, traffic
congestion, bad state of roads, inexperienced drivers, poor observance of road
traffic law and regulations by vehicle drivers. These result in slow pace in
general development results.
Despite of the insufficient number
of vehicles available for transport, the quality of these vehicles are nothing
to write home about. Most of these vehicles are the rejected and dumped
vehicles from the highly industrialized countries. These vehicles are imported
into the country as junks popularly known as tokunbo, and undergone several
transfers of ownership. These vehicles are characterized by worn out tyres, seats,
engines etc. As a result, their performance is limited, hence time is wasted in
moving from one urban centre to another in Enugu state, more over, the cost of
maintenance of these vehicles are also high cost of the few available
spare-parts. This is also coupled with the repair and service bills from the
mechanics.
The government has put in various
efforts both at federal and state levels to see that the problems are solved.
But still remains uncontrollable.
Based on these, the work tends to
investigate the problems of inter-urban road transportation in Enugu State.
