The Oil Rich Town
INTRODUCTION
In the 12th
century a Prince called Nenuwa from Ode in Ijebu Province-Ogun
State, left Ode Kingdom. Following the unsuccessful bid for the throne of Ijebu Land, after losing the contest for the throne, him and some group of people found a new home. After much travelling they finally settled in an Island (now called Koko Town in Warri North). Prince
Nenuwa & his people make a journey from the West to the South. In
their journey down to the South, they saw an Island of forest with
good water front for fishing. They stop and check around if anyone is living in
the forest, but no one where see. Prince Nenuwa & his people sat down
and think what to do, and he called on the Juju Priest among them to consult
the Oracle. If there will be peace and harmony in the Land, also if the Soil
and Water will be fertile for them. The Juju Priest carry out ritual in the
Land to appease the Land and any evil forces in the Land to enable them settle
in the Land. When Prince Nenuwa and the Priest were satisfy with the entire
ritual carryout and firmly believed that the Land is clean from evils. He and
his people decided to live in the Land.
The first settlement started with the building of houses with Woods and Bamboo. As time was going Prince Nenuwa get married and some of his people get married too. After some years of stay, when
The Prince
called on the Priest to consult the Oracle and asked the Oracle where they are
to move to. After the priest consulted the oracle, he told the Prince
where they should move to. Prince Nenuwa didn’t sail with all
his people, but he left Princess Ojomba and some group of people in the Island (now called Koko).
