ECONOMIC MINERALS RESOURCES IN NIGERIA

THE MOST ECONOMIC MINERALS RESOURCES IN NIGERIA

In this article, I will be sharing with you on the most economic mineral resources in Nigeria. Before we proceed in this topic of major importance, it is imperative we gain full understanding of the term "Economic Minerals"?  Economic Mineral are Mineral Resources that has commercial value. That fully understood, we can now proceed in our learning.

Nigeria is the most populous country in the African continent with a population figure of 140 million people according to the last 2006 census, Nigeria have the highest resources in West Africa.

Nigeria mineral resources are considered as a source of revenue to the country. Man greatest need on earth is food. In different Geographical location in Nigeria agriculture was the first importance resources in terms of cash crop and second was the mining of mineral ores and oil.

Among all these minerals in Nigeria the three major ones are coal, Tin and Petroleum. In the methods of mining we have surface mining and underground mining. In surface mining, open-cast or open-pit method is used, when the mineral deposit lies within a few metres of the surface, open-cast method can be carry out but the unwanted material lying on top of the mineral deposit must be removed first, if it soft it can be dig out. If it is hard, there is a need of explosives to loosen it. Minerals like coal, iron ores, copper and tin are extracted through this method if they occur near or on the surface.

This method is also applied in the production of non-metallic minerals or industrial minerals such as sand and gravel, phosphate, clay, limestone and gypsum. The mining of coal in Enugu was carried out by the underground method of horizontal tunnels.

Underground Mining, in this method, the mineral deposit is at a depth or covered by a great thickness of other rocks on the surface. Thus the extraction of mineral can be carryout through sinking wells and brought to the surface by pressure. Minerals like petroleum and natural gas and coal are extracted through underground method.

Libya is the largest producer of crude oil in Africa and Nigeria is the second largest producer of crude oil in Africa. In August 3rd 1956, Nigeria joined the world nations of oil producing and later become 6th largest oil exporter in the world. Since 1970’s oil has accounted for 80% of the Nigerian government’s revenue and 95% of the country export earnings.

NIGERIA'S INDUSTRIES

Presently, in Nigeria, in different geographical location, the industries are not enough to create employment for the citizens. In the table below some states have no industries and some have one, two and three, making it hard for citizens to have employment.

Industrial Machine

As our population is increasing there is need for more creation of industries and to invite more foreign investors to come and invest in Nigeria. This will enable those states which have no industries to have.

HEALTH CARE

Geographically in the past three decade, some Nigeria health care professionals emigrate to the developed world to work in the health institutions. Then the health sector of Nigeria faces some challenges. Presently in Nigeria some of the health care professionals are foreigners from India and China, some of them base in Lagos.

The expansions of primary health care facilities in the riverine areas are poor. Some rural areas in Nigeria lack access road to rush patient who has being giving first aid treatment in the primary health care centre or to the central hospital in town. Which the millennium development goal for health care is that to all primary health care centre there must be minor road that will be created to link to the major road, so that patient could reach central hospital on time.

Health is wealth, the government of every level should invest in the health sector to save life and may sure health care facilities are available

HOUSING

Housing is a permanent structure built for people to live in. It is a structure which last for so many years before destruction, but many people use it as a sources of income and make it cost so high in towns or city.

                                                     Sample of a Modern House

Geographically all living things on earth need shelter to give protection, especially from the weather or from danger. Hosing brings in development in different location.

Sample of a Modern House

Housing problems: This is a major problem facing Nigerians. Shortage of accommodation in towns rush up rental rates high and house owners put in one-two years (fixed duration) payment fees plus agent fees before the renter can pack in to stay. This as being so on for many years now and up to date, places like warri (collect two years), Port - Harcourt (collect two years), Lagos (collect one year), Enugu (collect one- two years) etc.

However, some of these houses are built for comfort and some are not. But due to the growth of the city or towns, also the opportunities that are available in towns make the rural dwellers to migrate to search for employment in towns.

Sample of Room and Parlor House

As the Urban population growth increases many where force to live in slums, ghettos and squatter, because there is no choice.

Building materials: The cost of building materials are high everyday in market. This too make rental rates high and the cost of land is high, so is not easy for common man who wish to built a house to live in to do.

Many who can afford to built due to the high cost of building materials and land, they high their price of house rent. The best the government could do it to regulate the price of building materials and land.

FACTORS OF DEVELOPMENT

Haven looked at the indicators of development we still need to look at the “factors of development”.

These factors of development include the following:
  • Nature of soils
  • Relief
  • Climate
  • Absence of Disaster
  • Economic Activities
  • Administration
Nature of Soils: Food is one of the basic requirements for human existence. Fertile soils area is the best for intensive agricultural activities. Such location facilitates human movements and exchange of ideas and product. It is a potential center for trade communication, administration and production. Hence the growth of such settlement. Examples include: In Nigeria, Sokoto plain for rice and beans, Benue for cereals and yams, Abakaliki, Uzo-Uwani areas for rice, also central U.S.A for grains and cereals.

Relief: When people are choosing settlement, people chose a location that will favour them like low lands, valleys and plains that are good for agricultural and communication activities. But since lowland favours human habitation, highland and rugged topography will rebel human settlement. Such towns that grow on a lowland location where agriculture and communication are possible are Lagos, Aba (Nigeria), Durban (South African).

Climate: A climate that favours and attract people, equally leads to the growth and development of settlement. Also make crops and animals to growth well. Example of such location that grows on this kind of climate is jos plateau. (Nigeria).

Absence of Disaster: People love to settle in a location where there is absence of natural and man-made disasters. Such location tends to attract people and growth fast. Examples such as Ibadan (Nigeria), Rome (Italy) and Cape Town (South Africa).

Economic Activities: Many settlements grow because of the presence of economic activities that take place in the location, which attract people and create the opportunities of jobs to people. Economics activities such as trading, farming, mining etc. make settlement to grow fast.

Administration: People like to settle in administrative towns where there are social amenities and other facilities that are present in such areas.

GEOGRAPHY LECTURES

A lecture is an oral presentation intended to present information to an audience or teaches people about a particular subject, for example by a university or college teacher or someone with a specialize knowledge in a particular field of studies.. Geography Lectures are used to convey critical geographical information, history, background, theories and equations.

Though lectures are much criticized as a teaching method, universities have not yet found practical alternative teaching methods for the large majority of their courses. Critics point out that lecturing is mainly a one-way method of communication that does not involve significant audience participation. Therefore, lecturing is often contrasted to active learning. Lectures delivered by talented speakers can be highly stimulating; at the very least, lectures have survived in academia as a quick, cheap and efficient way of introducing large numbers of students to a particular field of study.

This section introduces us to high quality lectures on the subject of geography. My intention in creating the Geography Lecture section is to make it a highly resourceful section for high quality and well researched geography information.

THE INDICATORS OF DEVELOPMENT

Indicator as an English word means a sign that is showing how a situation is changing. Development is the process of creating a change that transforms a human groups and societies into advanced one.

Geographically the indicators of development are:
  • Infrastructure
  • Accessible Roads
  • Income
  • Employment
  • Population Quality
Infrastructure: This is one of the important indicators of development. All human beings on earth need good comfortable home for relaxation after work. Housing brings in development in different geographical location and brings out the beauty of the environment, and also includes others social amenities.

Accessible Roads: When discussing development if there is no accessible roads for easy movement development as not started. So accessible roads need to be put into concentration, good roads make transportation of passengers and goods to reach their location easy. Roads create the means of communication, distribution of raw materials to industries and finished goods to market easily.

Income: Income brings development in a country and equitable distribution of it makes one to work harder. Example people working in an oil company work hard because they are well pay.

Employment: A well employed personal usually struggle to satisfy his needs. The employed ones are independent people. Development and employment work together because if there is no employment no development, also to development too. Opening of economic brings employment and development in a country.

Population Quality: This is one important indicator of development. Development can be more productive and effective where there is division of labour, hence people will be able to specialize in one type of work or skill. In some developed countries where populations are few. The government of the country use to brings out visa lottery forms for people to come into the country to work. Because many factories are built and equipped but no people to work there.
