POLYTECHNIC AND COLLEGE OF EDUCATION STUDENTS PROTEST IN LAGOS
The Polytechnic and College of Education Students protest in Lagos. On Wednesday peace protest were carry out by students to appeal to the government of Nigeria to meet the demands of their striking lecturers.
The protesting students gather in front of Yaba tech gate were they took their kick off, at about 10:00am leaving Yaba for Third mainland bridge. When policemen accosted them around Adekunle bus stop. While others protest students disrupted vehicle movement around Jibowu to Onipanu bus stop on the busy Ikorodu road.
Institution students involved in protest and others are Yaba tech, Federal college of technology, Education Rights Campaign(ERC) and other concerned youths. Protesters carrying placards wrote "we say no to strike" "we want to go back to our classrooms e t c. The students spokeperson from Yaba tech Mr. Joshua Ayokunmi, urgued the government to end the strike to save the future of youths.
What the striking lecturers wants, a full implementation of the consolidated tertiary institution salary structure(CONTISS 15) and to stop the discrimination against HND.
However the federal government of Nigeria had made an offer to play N40b to ASUP and Colleges of Education as CONTISS 15 arrears in two instalments. The government said its would pay first instalment in march 2014 and second instalment in September 2014. ASUP and College of Education Lecturers refused the offer and go on with the strike.
Speaking with Lawmakers and striking lecturers the supervising Minister of Education, Nyeson Wike, said that the Salaries, wages and income Commission was opposed to the payment of arrears owed lecturers.
