TURKEY: 201 DEAD AND HUNDREDS TRAPPED IN MINE DISASTER
Explosion killed 201 people and Hundreds were trapped in the coal mine disaster in Western Turkey. On Tuesday the Turkey province of Manisa, where a total number of 787 mine workers became trapped inside coal mine. Wednesday the Turkey government warn that rescue efforts were delayed to miners.
The explosion was believed to been caused by a faulty electrical transformer, at around 12:30 GMT Tuesday.
Rescue operations continued to rescue workers, those rescued alive were 80 and injured four, were seriously hospitalize. The Energy minister Taner Yuldiz, said the number of injured could rise even further as those who came to help out may be among the injured, due to smoke.People gathered around the explosion site as rescuers brought out injured, workers with coughing and struggling to breathe due to the smoke and dust.
The fire officers try to pump in clean air into the mine for those still trapped down. The distance to them was about two kilometres from the entrance.
The Energy minister Yildiz said that a team of 400 people were involved in the rescue effort, the main caused of the deaths was carbon monoxide and dioxide which is poisonous gas. He move on and said Time isn't in our working favour we need to get them out.
The mining company Soma Komur, Spokesperson saying the mine had a maximum safety measures. Unfortunately, some of our workers have lost their lives in the accident. The accident despite maximum safety measures and inspections, but prompt action where taken. The Turkey's minister of Labour and Social Security said, the mine was inspected on March 17 and was found with safety standard.
