FLOOD CONTROL


Flood controls are carryout in Europe, Africa, North America, Asia, and the rest part of the continents, Dams, Levees and Weirs are used to prevent rivers from bursting their banks. While in coastal flooding, defenses such as seawalls, beach nourishment and barrier islands are used. Countries like Japan, India, Australia, France, Nigeria etc has experience floods. Series of reservoirs were built in Paris (France) to control flood by the French government after the Great flood of Paris in 1910. England (London) is protected with mechanical barrier across river Thames from sea flooding. The province of Canada (Manitoba) was protected from floods by the construction of dikes, and floodways. Manitoba was located in low-plain.

In the Geographical Regions of Africa the construction of dams was make to control floods. The Aswan dam was built to control any amounts of floods along the Nile river. Also the Jebba and Kainji dams were built to control floods along the River Niger. But Jebba and Kainji dams overflow (in September 2012) to the states in the River Niger in Nigeria, when the dams had attained their highest water levels and caused Great destruction to the peoples living in the flood plains of River Niger. Lagdo Dam in Cameroun also was built to control floods along the River Benue axis. But in August, 2012 the Lagdo dam in Cameroun were opened, and flow to Adamawa (Nigeria), destroy several farmlands, houses and kill many people in the area.
